Description

A classic warm and comforting plant-based Apple Pie featuring a flaky, buttery crust and spiced apple filling with natural ingredients for a nostalgic and flavorful dessert perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup cold plant-based butter, cut into small pieces
  • 46 tablespoons cold water

For the Filling

  • 68 medium crisp apples (such as Granny Smith, Fuji, or a mix)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (natural)
  • 3/4 cup natural brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon (natural)
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (natural)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons natural gelling agent

Optional Variations and Toppings

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (for oat crust option)
  • Maple syrup (natural) instead of brown sugar, to taste
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • Plant-based caramel sauce (natural) for drizzling
  • Plant-based vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (plant-based) for serving
  • Cinnamon (natural) for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crust: In a large bowl, mix the all-purpose flour and salt. Cut in the cold plant-based butter with a pastry cutter or fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add cold water a tablespoon at a time and gently bring the dough together. Form into a disk, wrap, and chill for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Slice the Apples: Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples. Toss the slices with lemon juice to prevent browning and set aside.
  3. Make the Filling: In a bowl, combine apple slices, natural brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural), apple cider vinegar, and natural gelling agent. Toss well to coat the apples evenly with all ingredients.
  4. Roll Out the Dough: Divide the chilled dough into two equal portions. Roll out one portion on a floured surface to fit your pie dish. Carefully transfer it to the dish to form the base crust.
  5. Add the Filling: Pour the prepared apple filling into the crust-lined pie dish and spread evenly.
  6. Top and Seal the Pie: Roll out the second dough portion and place it over the filling. Trim any excess dough, then crimp the edges to seal tightly. Cut small vents in the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking.
  7. Bake to Perfection: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the pie on a lower rack for 50 to 60 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling through the vents. Let the pie cool slightly before slicing to allow the filling to set.

Notes

  • Choose a mix of tart and sweet apple varieties for a balanced flavor.
  • Keep all ingredients cold to ensure a flaky crust.
  • Handle the dough gently to avoid developing tough crust.
  • Use natural gelling agent in moderation to avoid soggy or overly firm filling.
  • Allow the pie to rest before serving so the filling sets properly.
