Description

General Tso’s Brussels Sprouts are a bold and crispy snack or side dish featuring tender Brussels sprouts coated in a tangy, slightly sweet, and zesty sauce made from apple cider vinegar and vegetarian Worcestershire sauce. This flavorful, plant-based recipe is easy to prepare and perfect as an appetizer, side, or light main with irresistible texture and wholesome ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 500g fresh Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil (natural)

General Tso’s Sauce

  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar (natural)
  • 2 tbsp vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup (natural)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (natural)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder (natural)
  • 1/2 tsp chili flakes
  • 2 tbsp water (optional, to adjust consistency)

Garnish

  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Brussels Sprouts: Trim the base of each Brussels sprout and slice them in half for even cooking. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry to ensure crispiness when cooked.
  2. Coat and Crisp the Sprouts: Toss the halved Brussels sprouts in cornstarch to evenly coat each piece. Heat sesame oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and fry the sprouts in batches until golden brown and crisp on all sides. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  3. Make the Tangy General Tso’s Sauce: In a bowl, whisk together apple cider vinegar, vegetarian Worcestershire sauce, maple syrup, soy sauce, garlic powder, and chili flakes. Add a small amount of water if needed to balance consistency.
  4. Combine Brussels Sprouts and Sauce: Return the fried Brussels sprouts to the skillet over medium heat. Pour the prepared sauce over them and toss thoroughly to coat evenly. Allow the sauce to reduce slightly and become glossy, clinging beautifully to the sprouts.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Remove from heat and sprinkle with chopped green onions and toasted sesame seeds if using. Serve hot as an appetizer, side, or snack.

Notes

  • Dry the Brussels sprouts thoroughly before frying to ensure maximum crispiness.
  • Use medium-high heat to achieve a golden crust without burning the sprouts.
  • Toss the sprouts with sauce quickly while it is hot so it sticks well and intensifies flavor.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan; fry in batches to maintain even crisping and avoid steaming.
  • Adjust chili flakes or add fresh chopped jalapeños for desired spice level.
  • This recipe can be baked for a lighter version; toss sprouts with cornstarch and roast at high temperature until crispy.
