Description

Soft and zesty Orange Rolls combine a light, fluffy texture with vibrant citrus flavors from fresh orange zest and juice. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a snack, these rolls are made with plant-based ingredients for a moist and tender bite. A natural orange glaze adds a glossy finish and extra burst of citrus brightness.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 cup plant-based milk, warmed slightly
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free baking blend for variation)
  • 2 teaspoons fresh orange zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
  • 3 tablespoons plant-based butter, softened

Filling Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup plant-based butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons fresh orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange juice

Glaze Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon natural gelling agent

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Warm the plant-based milk slightly and dissolve the active dry yeast with 1 tablespoon sugar in the milk. Let it rest until foamy, about 5 to 10 minutes. In a large bowl, mix flour, the remaining sugar, fresh orange zest, and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture, vegetable oil, orange juice, and softened plant-based butter. Stir to combine and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  2. First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Allow it to rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  3. Prepare the Filling: While the dough rises, mix softened plant-based butter, granulated sugar, fresh orange zest, and fresh orange juice until well combined to make a fragrant, sweet filling.
  4. Shape the Rolls: After the dough has doubled, roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle. Spread the orange filling evenly over the dough. Rolling from the longer side, gently roll into a tight log. Cut into 10 to 12 equal rolls and place them spaced slightly apart in a greased baking dish.
  5. Second Rise and Baking: Cover the rolls with a towel and let rise another 30 to 45 minutes until puffy. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown and fully cooked.
  6. Glaze and Serve: Mix powdered sugar, fresh orange juice, and natural gelling agent to create a smooth glaze. Drizzle over warm rolls for a shiny finish and extra citrus flavor.

Notes

  • Use fresh oranges for the brightest flavor in zest and juice.
  • Do not over-knead dough to maintain softness; knead until elastic.
  • Let dough rise in a warm environment to enhance yeast activity.
  • Roll dough evenly to ensure uniform baking and prevent dry edges.
  • Apply glaze while rolls are warm to maximize absorption and shine.
